After learning that other CR-V owners with the same problem ended up getting the oil changed, Witzig asked for the same stopgap solution.

And as Witzig learned when he started researching the issue online, hundreds more have aired their concerns on online forums devoted to Honda owners. Now, after owner complaints dating back to early and after repeated questions from Consumer Reports, Honda said in a statement that it is working on a fix.

The repair will be covered by the warranty, Martin said, and will also be applied to model-year CR-Vs before the s go on sale. Consumers, including Witzig, are angered by how long it has taken Honda to address the problem.

Honda has sold more thanCR-Vs in the U. John German—a veteran automotive engineer and senior fellow at the International Council on Clean Transportation, who previously worked at Honda, Chrysler, and the Environmental Protection Agency—says that the problem of fuel mixing with oil probably stems from one of two causes: improperly designed fuel injectors that spray fuel directly onto the cylinder walls or the engine not heating up enough to vaporize gasoline left over in an engine cylinder.

And over time, that could seriously damage the engine. It could also lead to stalling or loss of power during short trips or low-speed driving, such as in heavy traffic, especially in cold weather.

Note that Civics sold in the U. While the problem may be more common in those circumstances, it also has been reported in warmer temperatures.

For example, Jithin Daniel, a year-old aircraft engineer in Dallas, noticed gasoline mixing with his oil last winter when the temperature dipped into the 40s. This may be a rare problem, but it does happen, and when it happens, it should be addressed. When asked by CR, the company failed to clarify how or if engines sold in China differ from those sold in the U. But Honda did say that it does not believe that the problem affects the safe operation of the vehicle or that it violates any U.

S laws or regulations. Honda may want to avoid calling it a safety issue in part because of cost: In the U. But in the case of product updates, all these details are left to the discretion of the carmaker, Friedman says. Sometimes automakers tell vehicle owners of available repairs only if they complain to their dealers.

And even extended warranties eventually expire, while a free repair under a recall never does. In a statement to Consumer Reports, NHTSA acknowledged receiving several complaints about the and CR-V regarding the smell of gasoline in the passenger compartment and dilution of the engine oil with gasoline. Stalled six times while backing up on different occasions, safety features not working properly while driving.

Others have told us or NHTSA that they needed to get their oil changed even more often—every 1, or even miles in some cases. Other vehicle owners have been told to take longer trips that include highway driving to help warm up the engine.

Some have had their fuel injectors or spark plugs replaced. One CR-V owner even told us that the dealer replaced the engine—but that the new engine has the same problem. All that has been frustrating, and concerning, to CR-V owners. Haughton agrees. In explaining why Honda addressed the problem sooner in China than in the U. Another reason Honda may have acted more quickly in China: pressure from social media. My Honda Accord is having problems accelerating.

Starting from the park position, it backs out just fine. But then when I change the gear to drive, it stalls and takes a couple seconds to start moving forward.

Later when applying gas, occasionally the car just does not accelerate. Then periodically the car will start increasing speed. Then, after I stop on a red light and start trying to move again, the acceleration again stalls and then flares up. The rpm goes to to and the car starts making a lot of noise. Despite only going 20 mph. Again, periodically the car will pick up speed and the rpm will settle down.

But it is getting worse. The check engine light came on and the code was P What should I do? Do you. Your problem is related to the transmission. It could be disconnected, open or shorted main shaft speed sensor circuit, or a faulty main shaft speed sensor.

It is located on transmission end case below battery. Check to make sure everything is plugged in properly, clean and tight. If it appears okay, then the sensor is most likely the problem. Was this answer. I took it to a mechanic and he claims that there is a transmission problem and the transmission needs to be replaced.

However the car sometimes picks up speed to mph. Maybe even faster if I tried. Is it likely that the transmission needs to be replaced given the nature of the problem? This seems like a worst case and very expensive scenario for a car. Not being there to drive the vehicle makes it tough for me. I have to say, according to the code you got, it sounds like a sensor issue.

You said it works properly in reverse; however, when you place it in drive, it doesn't want to go. That is odd because the same clutch pack is used for reverse and low gear. Since it doesn't slip in reverse, I feel the clutches are good, and the sensor may be the issue. Perhaps you should get an opinion from a different tech before replacing the transmission. Can you tell me the condition of the transmission fluid?

Is it clean and full or is it dirty? Is it low? I have the same issue as described by wildcat. Same exact acceleration issue with my Honda Accord I changed transmission twice, problem still.I have a honda civic LX that slips very very seldom upon acceleration. It happens under light acceleration and medium acceleration I dont accelerate hard enough to see it slip at high acceleration, it might! What happens is, the car stops accelerating and simply idles.

As the motor idles the car drifts and slows down. I have never done it, but I bet in this state I could come to a complete stop just by drifting if I keep my foot in the same spot on the accelerator.

When I change my foot, and accelerate harder, the car wakes back up and keeps accelerating like nothing even happened. I dont think it is the transmission slipping, because in that instance revs would climb and acceleration would halt and that is not the case.

I dont know what could cause this problem! The only thing that I know of that is wrong with the car is the exhaust manifold has a big crack in it right before the upstream 02 sensor. No doubt this leak is messing with the cars readings of the AFRs. Could this be part of the problem? It is throwing a code for the catalyst system.

Highly likely the exhaust leak causes the catalyst related error code. A leak up front can also poison you with carbon monoxide.

Fix it. You have known problems that have not been fixed. Fix them and see what happens. Why guess? Test it and find out.
