Concat and Concatenate functions in Power Apps

As an example, here's a table of addresses that might appear in an app. To demonstrate, I'll take the first address from this table and describe how to extract various sections of this address.

I described this in a previous post. In our test data, the house number appears as the first set of characters, followed by a space.

So to extract the house number, we call the Split function to split the full address into a table by the space character, and we then return the first record with the First function. Taking one of the addresses as an example, this is the formula we would use:. This formula splits the full address by the "," character. The Trim function removes the preceding space from " Downers Grove". In the next example, the State always appears as the second last block of text in the address when separated by the comma character.

So to return the state "IL"this is the formula we would use. Finally, to return the zip code, we can just split the string by a "," and return the last row. This is how the formula would look:. Conclusion In this post, we've seen some examples of how to extract specific parts of a string.

Note that there are various other ways for us to carry out this task. For example, we can use the Match function to carry out this job. Images - How to create images that can change depending on data.It would be nice to have a function that would allow us to split a string based on a character or substring. Something like Split "FirstName LastName" and have it return a single record table or something like that.

At this time you have several text functions that might be able to help with this.

Replace and Substitute functions in Power Apps

To see all of them, click the FX between the property and the function bar at the top of the screen. Or perhaps a single column table with each record representing 1 substring that the split returned. That way we could do a count on the number of records to see if the split returned the number of results we were expecting.

Might be that I don't understand the function Right correctly, but the result was this: "iddle Name" I am not trying to get the middle name, just cut the string at the first " " and keep whats on the right part of that first " ". Text, Find " ",FullNameBox. Text And the third parameter for Mid is not used. The Right example here only works because the first and last name have the same length.

If the last name isis of different length than the first then you need to use and likely should always use. Skip to main content. Turn on suggestions. Auto-suggest helps you quickly narrow down your search results by suggesting possible matches as you type. Showing results for.

If you specify a single string of text, the return value for either function is the string with any extra spaces removed. If you specify a single-column table that contains strings, the return value is a single-column table of trimmed strings. If you have a multi-column table, you can shape it into a single-column table, as working with tables describes.

By trimming spaces between words, Trim is consistent with the function of the same name in Microsoft Excel. However, TrimEnds is consistent with programming tools that trim spaces only from the start and end of each string. The following examples use a single-column collection, named Spacesthat contains these strings:. Extra spaces don't appear if you display a collection by clicking or tapping Collections on the File menu. To verify string length, use the Len function.

The Concat function concatenates the result of a formula applied across all the records of a table, resulting in a single string.

Use this function to summarize the strings of a table, just as the Sum function does for numbers. Fields of the record currently being processed are available within the formula.

You simply reference them by name as you would any other value. You can also reference control properties and other values from throughout your app. For more details, see the examples below and working with record scope.

Use the Split or MatchAll function to split a string into a table of substrings. To create these global variables in an app, insert a Button control, and set its OnSelect property to this formula:.

For these examples, set the Text property of a Label control to a formula from the first column of the next table. For this example, add a blank, vertical Gallery control, set its Items property to the formula in the next table, and then add a label in the gallery template. For these examples, set the Text property of a label to a formula from the first column of the next table.

The last two examples include an extra ", " at the end of the result. The function appends a comma and a space to the Name value of every record in the table, including the last record. In some cases, these extra characters don't matter. For example, a single-space separator doesn't appear if you show the result in a label. If you want to remove these extra characters, use the Left or Match function. If you used Concat with a separator, you can reverse the operation by combining the Split and MatchAll functions.

For these examples, add a blank, vertical gallery, set its Items property to a formula in the next table, and then add a label in the gallery template. You may also leave feedback directly on GitHub. Skip to main content.
