Samsung says that the weight of the headset has been slightly reduced from grams to grams, cable included.

Above we can see the clearest changes to the nose cavity. The opening is not only much wider Samsung says from 32mm from 40mmbut the rubber flaps have been adjusted to point away from the face instead of perpendicular to it. We can also see minor adjustments to the buttons on the bottom of the housing, including a slight tweak to the microphone placement.

The headphones also get a little red flourish on the inside to highlight the AKG branding. The face interface is also now removable and washable, which will be deeply appreciated by anyone using the headset for games that lead to a good workout.

Samsung says the overall width of the face interface has been increased from mm to mm, which may make it easier to fit glasses inside. Hopefully the increased surface area will better distribute pressure and improve long term comfort. We hope it was in fact adjusted, as on the original Odyssey the headphones could be hard to get in just the right spot without adjusting the headset in a way which would be detrimental to visual quality. And the faceplate padding definitely looks much better and like it will be more comfortable.

Having the choice between the joystick and the trackpad works pretty well. Not as good as the Rift controllers but better than the Vive wands. Sounds like you are used to it, But i came from a Vive to a Lenovo, and now and Odissey.

That anti SDE technology is definitely impressive : invisible pixels and a vr headset invisible to the naked eye also!

Great job samsung! That would be a pretty big win for the Quest, and if it turns out to outline map the vietnam war answers the mainstream device some predict, it could be a big win for VR as a whole.

Samsung Launches Odyssey+ Windows VR Headset with “Anti-SDE” Display

True Samsung may keep it exclusive for time being. Indeed, look at iphonessome parts are from Samsung. Samsung clearly states they use some sort of filter screen. Are you waiting for the Oculus Rift S? Find out more about its strengths and weaknesses in this hands-on review. In addition, the Odyssey Plus has a special Anti-SDE filter similar to the Playstation VR which removes the screendoor-effect and makes the display appear to have an even higher resolution. Setting it up is also extremely easy.

Your PC will also automatically find the controllers. Otherwise, the Windows Mixed Reality home screen will not launch. Go to Control Panel and look for Bluetooth device setup. When your PC finds the controller click on add.

Do this for the other controller as well. The headset can have trouble tracking if the environment is too dark, or if there is a small bright spot in an otherwise dim environment. The Samsung Odyssey is quite comfortable, moreso than my Lenovo Explorer. In addition, the Odyssey has thick and very comfortable padding with fake leather. I can wear it much longer than the Lenovo Explorer without discomfort. Another issue is that unlike some WMR headsets, the visor does not swing up.

The first time you try the headset, it may take a couple of minutes to adjust the headset to find a headset position that works. However, I found it much easier to find the sweet spot on the Odyssey compared to the Lenovo Explorer. I also found that the controllers occasionally jump around in VR momentarily. For fast-paced games, the controller tracking can be an issue. For example in Beat Saber, sometimes the saber disappears off to the side and as a result, it registers a miss.

It feels pretty much the same as using the HTC Vive. I could even play Beat Saber. If you are a casual user for whom convenience is a significant factor, then Odyssey Plus could be a good VR headset for you, depending on what games you play.

If you play HTC Vive games on Steam and they are not fast-paced, then in my opinion, Odyssey Plus is a better Steam VR headset for casual users and enthusiasts because of its convenience. If you play Oculus Rift games, then you have to make sure your PC has a powerful graphics card GTX or better; not sure if is good enough. If it is, then the Odyssey Plus will provide a slightly higher resolution than the Rift S. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam.

And the integrated headphones and microphone help offset the cost difference. Samsung was late joining the Windows Mixed Reality party, but when it finally stopped by, it showed up with the fanciest toys.

It also features moisture-proof leather cushions, and to top it off Samsung redesigned Microsoft's controllers with more thought for ergonomics. In lateMicrosoft announced that it would be bringing Windows 10 into the immersive computing age. The company revealed Windows Mixed Reality, a platform that encompasses the spectrum of immersive computing. Microsoft boasted that Universal Windows Platform UWP apps from the Windows Store would be compatible with the 3D Windows Mixed Reality environment, and that you would be able to do your daily computing tasks while fully immersed in a 3D space.

Microsoft set the hardware specifications for certified devices, and it created a reference design from which to build. However, Microsoft left it up to its partners to decide what changes they wanted to make to differentiate their device from other Windows Mixed Reality headsets. These included minimum resolution, refresh rate, and video and data interface compatibility requirements. Really, it's in a class of its own. Samsung is also the only Windows Mixed Reality hardware partner that put the extra effort into refining the motion controllers to make them more comfortable and more robust.

I use my glasses all the time with the Odyssey. Other than a bit of vertical fuzziness at the bottom due to the progressive lens, I have no issues using it. The article comments that if you wear glasses to move on. I wear my glasses all the time with my Odyssey. Other than a bit of fuzziness at the bottom of the screen due to the my lenses I have a very enjoyable experience with the Odyssey. I hope Microsoft doesn't abandon their MR effort. Is it the inferior Vive controllers?

The sweet last-gen outside-in tracking? When you make a comment like that, it's nice to point out why. I don't see how the 6th point you list is a pro for the Vive, Evolution? Using ear-buds can be rather fatiguing when used for extended periods, both the fit and the type of sound you get when it's pumped at your ear drum in a tiny closed pressure chamber.

Did you noticed any change in quality? Is screen door really invisible like advertised? Yes its diffuser but not on screen surface rather its diffuser at nano sub pixel level and grid type which fill the gap between the pixel thus diffuser in reality do not cover sub-pixel but just cover the gap between them. Indeed its working. Is beyond doubt need. Also second generation of Oculus GO need to have these….

This came out over 2 weeks ago and no real reviews yet. I find it odd that only Reddit and Youtube have taken notice of a technology that may well become the new standard going forward, and potentially has huge benefits.

Anyway, it was enough to pique my interest, so I went and started searching for anything I could find on it… at the time, YouTube vids were about all I could find. The performance overall has been excellent, even in fairly low light. The anti-SDE tech seems like a big deal if it works. Does it seem to make a significant difference over the original? The one thing the Vive has over all of the others is having gotten out there early enough that their controller templates are in most all games, while some titles are totally playable on WMR headsets, even though their optimized for Vive or Rift.

I just run a search before I buy a game, when in doubt, to make sure others have found it working. I follow what you are sayingi wish you can add a lighthouse for added accuracy. I own the original Vive. Compared to my Vive it is like looking through a window.Welcome back maxpare79 nice to have a fellow ex-mod in the room.

Long story short, don't believe the hype Screen: Being a sims guy I was intrigued mainly by the screen, and was really excited to try it on.

The display on the Rift never bothered me, once you wear it for a while you tend to forget the imperfection. You can still see the pixels and the difference is definitely not night and day with the Rift, but the difference might be more noticeable to a Vive owner I also play with one regularly and find the screen on the rift sharper.

FOV might be a bit larger if you can succeed at getting the damn thing close to your eyes more about that later. Colors are great, I can sometimes see the fresnel ring during bright scenes, god ray don't bother me but again I was never bothered by those as well on my Rift.

Sweetspot: Alright in the Rift you can move your eyes to look around without any problems, in the Vive you actually have to move your head to look around, in this, it's between the 2, you can move your eyes a bit, but it get blurrier if you go to the full extent of your eyes movement Tracking: Tracking was spot on, and responsive, I would only loose tracking behind my head and with the controller directly in front of the headset example if you would try to take something and eat it in job simulator, you might loose tracking near your mouth Other then that I really didn't find any problems with it in my 2x3m space.

I dimmed the light in the room to a minimum and it would still work so I was impress by inside out tracking, was expecting it to be a load of crap but I can see it being the future now, one more camera on the headset at the back and I believe this might be the future.

Controllers: Again was expecting a subpar experience, but the controllers are actually fine, plastic feels cheap and they do require 2 batteries each, but the egonomics is just a bit below the Touch but better than the Vive wands, what is weird is that these IR lights on it are actually real leds, the controllers light up like a christmas tree. On a side note my hands are small so experience might differ for somebody with big hands. Audio: I am not an audio guy, headphones are good, on par with the Rift Setup: Literally 5 mins and your good to go, kudos there And now here comes the bad news: Headset construction: What can I say, this thing is friggin huge, I find it gigantic compare to my Rift, it's bulky and massive, if I could compare the construction of this thing it reminds me of the first gearVR but bigger same type of plastic Fit and comfort: Alright from different reviews I could tell that you had to have a specific head shape for this, it seems I am one of the lucky winner, I have a big head, as a reference, if I put a baseball cap on, I have to enlarge it by 2 pins the plastic thingy at the back of the head.

I have seen mods online to remove light leaks from this thing, luckily I had no more light leak then on my Rift through the noseI didn't experience leak on the side of the headset.

Samsung Holiday Deal Slashes New Odyssey+ to Just $300

My main problem with it is that this weight all sits on your forehead, and to get the sweetspot right you have to install the strap at the lowest spot possible at the back of your skull, which actually makes the HMD tilt up from your cheek, you have a weird feeling that this thing is dangling in front of your face rather then wearing it as a hat like the rift.

If you push it hard enough on your cheek you notice a wider FOV, but getting it to stay there is another matter. Maybe it get some use to but the pressure on the forehead is really annoying Software: Jesus, I love my Rift now more then ever because of this thing Alright where to start I might not know all the tips and tricks around the WindowsMR user experience, but I should not have to do research as well Everytime I want to start a game I have to mess around to get it to work, which does not happened on the RIft and not as much on the Vive for that matter.

One example is for some games you will have to remap the controllers in steam because the dev didn't have the WindowsMR headset in mind when they designed it. Conclusion 2 days with it, it's in the box back to Microsoft, if the screen would have been a much better improvement I would maybe have stick with it and the clunkyness of the interface and the comfort, but it's not worth it, don't believe the hype.

I wouldn't even call this Rift 1. But if a refresh of the Rift comes out with a screen that compares to this I might consider it if it's in the ballpark old joke, smaller park. But I really don't get how Samsung could issue a product so uncomfortable with all these headset already out there that they could just copy The ease of use of the Rift really shines when you come face to face with something like this. I wish Oculus Home would open the door to other headset natively so everyone could enjoy it.

While not exactly on par with the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive in terms of sheer graphics rendering though pretty darn close and build quality, the Samsung HMD Odyssey is worth considering if you want to stay within the Windows ecosystem and own a compatible PC. The headset also has a somewhat budget quality to it, which could be owing to its lightweight feel it weights g, or just under 1.

To tighten the device, you scroll a little dial on the back. It feels as though we could wear it easily for a lengthy period without experiencing neck strain or developing that cinching feeling around the cranium that other headsets tend to induce.

The screens pop with a resolution of 1, x 1, pixels per side and a refresh rate of between 90 to 60Hz. On paper, the numbers seem close. And, compared to the Dell Visor, which has visuals with a dull and even more pronounced ragged quality to them, the Samsung HMD Odyssey is undoubtedly superior.

We were taken into the Cliff House, which acts as a home base inside Windows MR from which you jump into different experiences, such as Halo Recruit and Move, a creative app that lets you paint in the air using the controllers. This function works effectively. A trackpad on the controllers lets you scroll through webpages that was the only use for it we were made privy to.

With cameras for six-degrees-of-freedom, or 6DOF, and inside-out tracking built inside the headset, moving around within the virtual world felt natural.

Unlike the Acer and Dell headsets, which require donning separate headsets in true accessory fashion, the spatial audio on the Samsung HMD Odyssey make it feel like a complete Windows MR device. HTC Vive may be safe for now because of its industry-leading room-scale tracking feature, but Oculus Rift should watch its back. There are no external sensors to set up, and whereas the higher-end competitors require a top-end PC to run VR experiences, a device as lightweight as an Ultrabook can generate Windows MR worlds.

Still, even though Samsung has put forward a worthy competitor to the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, those devices have a strong hold on the market, and it may be difficult for the Odyssey, or any Windows MR device, to break through.
