Back to the top.To qualify for VA disability compensation, the VA must determine that your medical condition was caused or aggravated by your military service. Service connection for a disability or death can be established through many ways. The four most common are:. The disability or condition was incurred in military service.

These determinations are usually cut and dry because the evidence should be in your military medical records. An example would be if you were shot or were wounded by an explosion during combat. The aggravation of a before-service disability during service. This can be harder to determine because it precludes prior-service conditions that get worse due to the natural progression of the disease or condition. When making a determination, the VA considers the places, types, and circumstances of your military service as documented in your service records.

The VA gives particular weight to combat duty and other hardships of service. Because of a service-connected disability, a secondary condition has occurred. It has been scientifically proven that some medical conditions can cause other medical conditions. For example, it is medically known that individuals who have had an amputation of the leg at or above the ankle are prone to develop heart disease. In such cases, the condition heart disease caused by the service-connected disability amputation can be rated as a service-connected disability by the VA.

Presumption that the disease or disability was incurred in military service.

In certain cases, the VA can make a presumption that a medical condition or disability is service connected. In all cases, there must be evidence of a current disability. The VA presumes that specific disabilities diagnosed in certain veterans were caused by their military service, so it issues a presumptive service-connection determination. If you fit into one of the following groups and are diagnosed with one of the listed conditions, the VA presumes that the circumstances of your service caused the condition, and it awards disability compensation.

Veterans within one year of release from active duty: If you are diagnosed with a chronic disease such as arthritis, diabetes, or hypertensionthe VA can presume the condition is service connected, even in the absence of any evidence of service connection. Additionally, the VA presumes a service connection if you served on active duty anywhere for 90 or more days and are diagnosed with ALS. Vietnam veterans: If you served in Vietnam between January 9,and May 7,and were exposed to the herbicide known as Agent Orange, the VA assumes service connection for the following medical conditions:.

Gulf War veterans: If you served in the Persian Gulf and have developed any of the following conditions it must be diagnosed before December 31,the VA will assume you have Gulf War Syndrome, which is considered to be service connected:.

At the present time, signs or symptoms of an undiagnosed illness include fatigue, skin symptoms, headaches, muscle pain, joint pain, neurological symptoms, respiratory symptoms, sleep disturbance, GI symptoms, cardiovascular symptoms, weight loss, and menstrual disorders. Other presumptive conditions: The VA may presume a condition is service connected in many other situations, based on the date and place of military service.

Robert, Two suggestions: 1. As for the CN VA home…. I thought of a third suggestion……. I have often seen this work to resolve local VA issues. Best wishes. This information on this site is really interesting although very helpful. My Father-law is a Vietnam Veteran currently living in a less than desirable nursing home with Type 2 diabetes which was contracted from exposure to Agent Orange and now his Cancer is in remission.

The VA will not even assist in helping us with his transportation to even have him moved. Boots to ground, front line, active duty member of the Vietnam War with no assistance from the VA. The information above says one thing, the VA in Cleveland says something different. Very frustrated. I am a disabled veteran with service connected status.I think the accompanying course text and the support online has been great.

I found the course text easy to follow and the in text examples are a good way to test understanding of what you learn as you work through the text. I enjoyed the course thoroughly. The question-answer sessions (discussions) were really helpful in understanding the concept. I have definitely gained a lot of knowledge about microarray analysis. Both the instructor and TA were exceptionally prompt in their responses to queries. The comments and suggestions were on point.

Thank you for an enjoyable, informative courseI learned a lot of short cuts that I will be grateful to use. I think the instructor and the assistant instructor were great. This course gave me a solid background on structure of databases and how to use SQL statements to query a databaseThis was the first class I've taken in a long time, the first online course I've ever taken, and my first statsics.

I found it very easy to navigate and was pleasantly surprised at how involved the instructor was in the online discussion. Wow, I think he is the most hands-on instructor that I've had in the whole PASS program.

He truly cares about giving feedback for every student and every thought. That is rare, special and positively remarkable. I truly appreciated it and I'd love to see more courses from Mr.

Unwin and spatial analysis--we would all benefit from itDave was a fantastic instructor. Lots of personalized feedback. The course was challenging but extremely rewarding. It's made me think about a range of new areas of statistical analysis, which I've found very stimulatingDr. Unwin is the most engaged instructor I have had yet at Statistics. His feedback and involvement was excellent in time given, content provided, and charitable attitude.

The Instructor, Dave Unwin, was great. I have to admit that I had my reservations about taking an online course, but I was pleasantly surprised. Dave obviously put a lot of thought and effort into creating the materials for the course as well as structuring the assignments to give students thoughtful work. He responded to each and every question and was very hands-on. This was a great class.

I learned a lot and enjoyed the format. The lessons, assignments, feedback, and discussions were all informative. I appreciate Professor Unwin's efforts to include references to web sites, journal articles, and books that will be very useful in the future.

The course helps me understand different approaches (pros and cons of each approach) in sample size estimates and provides hands-on experience in using various softwares. I highly recommend this course to folks involved in clinical study designI loved the new option to send assignments to the teaching assistant for suggestions before submitting the work to be marked.

Poonam was very helpful and provided the right amount of guidance without giving away the right answer. I'll never pass a queue again without thinking more about it :). In many stats classes I've taken other places, homework assignments can seem punitive for those who don't understand the material, but this homework seemed to further enhance my learning experience. I would definitely take another class with Dr. Pardoe if I had the opportunity.

The interaction with the lecturer was good, the book is great, the online book material on software is extremely helpful and the lecturer put a lot of effort into a synthesis of the books contents every week. This was by far the best course I took at statistics. Course administration was efficient. Overall, a pleasant learning experience which is at least as good as any face-to-face course I've attended. Please upgrade to a modern browser: 1.
